The opening screen of the game flickers to black a lot in ReactOS r70774 NTVDM. It works correctly in DosBox (no flicker).
IIRC DosBox used to have the same issue; it looks like https://sourceforge.net/p/dosbox/code-0/2335/ is the fix commit, unfortunately mixed with some other changes.
