Description
Since Windows Server 2008, there has been a Server Core installation option for Windows Server installs. Windows Server Core boots a minimal Windows environment, but does not use the standard Explorer shell. Instead, users are dropped into a command prompt window, similar to using Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
Microsoft highlights that Windows Server Core is easier to manage remotely and has a smaller attack surface. A ReactOS Server Core SKU could also be useful for ports to extremely memory constrained hardware.
This video demonstrates the evolution of Windows Server Core, if you need help visualizing how it may work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXk84uQGV1A
Starting with Windows Server 2016, LogonUI used a console mode fallback, and the Server Core version became the default version. A proper textmode version of Windows that doesn't load a GUI at all was also added, called Nano Server. You can see a demo of Nano Server here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bzfwr8mEHFs
Eventually, a "Server Nano" SKU would be desirable but let's start with Core first ![]()
