resolution/refresh rate change and crash with several applications

I've had this with several applications, but it's the easiest to reproduce with
enumwin. When i choose '4' it changes the resolution or refresh rate to
something my monitor can't display property (like it displays everything
multiple times over itself, striped, you know the thing ). And it crashes as
well, that is, numlock doesn't work, and the mouse doesn't move the cursor
