small zip file with small text file in it - if it's possible to check version#

compressed (zipped) folders are a feature new to XP. it's built-in to XP. it was not in windows 2000. PKZIP is availaqle as a library, but I believe it must be paid for.
7-zip is a free open-source project that includes many formats. it may be a bad idea to switch.
I do not know which version of pkzip is used by microsoft windows, but I could make a zip file for someone to analyze.
I would think it would be important to compress using the same backrev version level that microsoft windows is using, for compatibility with other windows XP's and vista and windows 7's.
